Grammar and literature are compulsory subjects for students of all classes. Some of the other subjects of Vedic philosophy and astrology are chosen as elective subjects. Similarly, for the distinguished scholar, along with the four subjects of Sanskrit, the two subjects of the Bachelor of Arts class in History, Political Science, English and Hindi, have the option of choosing one of the others. Only students studying two subjects in the Bachelor of Arts will be able to obtain the title of Prak Shastri.

All students who have passed the pre-classical first year and pre-classical second year of the University of Himachal Pradesh will be eligible for admission to the first year of classical. In addition, all those students who have passed the equivalent examination of Pre-Shastri First Year and Pre-Shastri Second Year from institutions recognized or recognized by the University of Himachal Pradesh will be eligible for admission in the first year of Shastri. Himachal Pradesh University has notified on 13th December 2022 that students who have not passed +2 class in Sanskrit are also eligible for admission in the first year of Shastri. But those students must pass in one paper of translation in the first year of classical. The marks obtained in this paper will not be added to the total marks. A student who has passed the Distinguished Scientific Examination with additional Elective/non Sanskrit Subject will be eligible for L.Sc. L. B and other classes will be eligible for admission. In addition, a student who has passed the specific scientific examination will also be eligible for appointment to Indian regional examinations such as administrative, judicial, reserve and departmental examinations. The intention is that all the qualifications for the degree of Distinguished Scientist will be the same as those for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A). A student who has obtained the degree of Shastri will be eligible for appointment as a Sanskrit teacher in schools.
